Valentine's Day is Darker Than You Think: A Spooky History 🖤

|Beth Case
Forget the cupids and the conversation hearts. The origin story of Valentine's Day is less about romance and more about blood, rebellion, and a good old-fashioned Roman festival where people got whipped with goat hides.

We love a dark past here at Seasonally Unwell. Let's peel back the layers of sugary sweet corporate marketing and find the real roots.

Lupercalia: The Original "Date Night"

Before there was St. Valentine, there was Lupercalia. Imagine: ancient Rome, mid-February. Priests sacrificing goats and dogs. Young men running naked through the streets, gently whipping women with strips of hide (thought to encourage fertility).

Romantic, right? It was less about roses and more about... aggressive matchmaking.

St. Valentine: Rebel with a Cause

Enter the Christian era. Emperor Claudius II decided single men made better soldiers. So, he banned marriage.

But St. Valentine, a priest (or two, or three, depending on the legend), thought that was BS. He secretly married young lovers anyway. Naturally, he was caught and executed.

Some stories say he even fell in love with his jailer's daughter and sent her the first "valentine" before his execution: "From your Valentine."

Talk about commitment.

From Martyrdom to Marketing

Fast forward a few centuries. The church tried to replace the pagan Lupercalia with something a little less... naked. So they stuck St. Valentine's feast day in the middle of it.

It took until the Middle Ages for "romantic love" to even enter the picture. And then, much, much later, came the greeting cards, the overpriced chocolates, and the general existential dread.

The Seasonally Unwell Take:

We're not here to tell you to hate love. But we are here to remind you that real love, or at least real history, is often messy, complicated, and a little bit goth.

So this Valentine's Day, celebrate the rebellion. Celebrate the dark humor. Celebrate the fact that your love story probably doesn't involve goat hides. Or, you know, do whatever you want.

If you're feeling the rebellious spirit, check out our Valoween collection because some hearts just bleed a little darker.Â
